Who is the author behind?
He is Igor Bertoncello Barboza, born in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, in October 10th, 1997. He received his degree in Electrical Engineering by the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil, in January of 2020. He did his final mandatory internship at the Fraunhofer Institute in Dresden, Germany, between August 2019 and January 2020. Since July of 2015, he is a member of the research group GEDRE, Inteligence in Lighting, of the UFSM where he has beeng working with topologies of AC/DC converters, DC-DC converters, LED drivers, converters integration and magnetics integration.

In 2023, he won 3rd place in the worldwide IAS Student Thesis Contest (Non-PhD category) from the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) with his Master's thesis work. His award-winning research focused on the use of Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductors in the power control stage of LED streetlighting. The award included a travel grant and paid accomodations for the IAS Annual Meeting 2023, which was held in Nashville, Texas, USA. The conference occured between October 29th and November 2nd, 2023.

He started his PhD studies at UFSM in September of 2022, and his PhD in regime of cotutelle between the UFSM and the University of Burgos (UBU), in Spain, since October 2023. He is advised by Prof. Dr. Marco Antônio Dalla Costa by the UFSM and by Prof. Dr. Guirguis Zaki Abdelmessih by the UBU. His PhD thesis is focused in integrated converters and integrated magnetics in LED, with the main goals of power density increase, high efficiency and degrees of freedom in these topologies.
He has participated in national and international research projects. The major part of his publications can be found through ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4833-749X.
In June 2026, he was appointed as a Substitute Lecturer at the Department of Electromechanics and Power Systems (DESP) of the Technology Center (CT) at the UFSM, where he will begin his teaching activities in August 2026. In this role, he contributes directly to the education of future engineers, strengthening the integration between teaching, research, and technological innovation at one of Brazil’s leading engineering institutions.
Besides his technical background, Igor has been an active member of IEEE since 2021. He already occupied places of Secretary and Chair of the IEEE UFSM Student Branch and IEEE SB IAS Chapter. Additionally, he was part of the Organizing Committee of the Seminar on Power Electronics and Control (SEPOC) 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. He was the official Student Chair of SEPOC 2024.
